I must admit, Paul’s Boutique probably would not have been my go-to site if I was looking to buy a new bag or purse. I tend to like more classic styles and colours so that I can easily pair them together with any outfit. From what I remember their handbags were very much about making a statement; I wasn’t particularly all that keen on how ‘busy’ their designs were, what with all the badges and tassels attached. So yes, I was slightly hesitant before seeing their new online collection for A/W15, but I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised with what they’ve come up with.
If you’re not familiar with the PB bags of yesteryear, subtle they were not! With styles ranging from hot-pink to zebra-print, the brand had somewhat of a cult following amongst teenage girls who loved their quirky designs and signature rainbow pom charms. Despite their upmarket price range and quality, celebrity affiliations and teen-based clientele meant a reputation for being a bit garish and naff. Much like the demise of Juicy Couture, I think people became a bit snooty about them and the craze for the crazy bags has fallen somewhat in recent years.
Hoping to dispel this chavvy image, the brand has undergone a complete reinvention, targeting the more discerning, fashion conscious woman. The new range is surprisingly sophisticated; gone are the technicolour totes and in their place, a pared down collection of handbags, purses, evening clutches and shoulder bags, not at all dissimilar to their designer counterparts. They’ve still kept a bit of PB fun in there, with tasteful leopard print, neon yellow lining and snakeskin finish. What’s more, there’s not a rainbow pom in sight! Having said that, if you were a fan of the previous bags, I’m afraid you might be a bit disappointed. I suppose now they are very similar to what other shops sell already, so perhaps you could argue that they’ve lost their sense of fun and individuality. What do you think?
Check out a couple of my favourite bags from the collection which you can buy here. You’d hardly believe they were from the same brand!
